The line from Charny to St Fargeau (Yonne) is what remains from two lines built by the PLM (Paris Lyon Méditerranée) in the years 1880-1885 :
the first one from Triguères to Surgy (Clamecy) and the other one from Auxerre to Gien, which gather together from Toucy-Moulins to Fontenoy.
They were integrated to the south-east SNCF network in 1938 and were progressively closed (in 1938 to passengers) and partly set down (Fontenoy-Surgy,
St Fargeau-Arrabloy(Gien), Auxerre-Toucy-Moulins).

Note that, in 1973, Toucy-St Fargeau has been closed to the freightage, then re-opened from 1977 to 1988.
All SNCF freight traffic has been stopped beyond Charny.

Created in 1985 at Laroche, the AATY acquired a first Picasso, used as a touristic train between Montargis and St Sauveur.
This train was inaugurated in 1987 and was able to run under SNCF agreement, until 1992, transporting more than 30000 passengers.
A 4 km (2.5 miles) section, was made operational by the AATY from St Sauveur to the Etangs de Moutiers.
The SNCF wanted to sell the 53 km (33.1 miles) section (90 hectares) from Charny to St Sauveur, and it is the SIVU which saved the Puisaye Railway.
The touristic train reopened on the 8th august 1998.
The line was cleaned up from Toucy to the Etangs de Moutiers, and from Villiers to Charny.
The 9 km section, from Toucy to Villiers was cleaned up by the AATY volunteers.
Since 2000, the section from Toucy to Villiers is operational and, since 2002, we have the authorisation to go until St Sauveur (27 km).
